Kistler's compact pressure sensor works at high temperatures

-- Test & Measurement World, 7/23/2008 9:55:00 AM

Intended for elevated temperature evaluations and R&D studies in harsh environments where space is a consideration, Kistler Instrument's 4007B series pressure sensor covers measuring ranges of 0 to 5 bar and 0 to 20 bar absolute from –40°C to +200°C. The sensor is just 21 mm long and 6.2 mm in diameter with an integral cable. While particularly useful for automotive intake/exhaust manifold pressure measurements, the tiny instrument can also be used for engine oil/fuel pressure studies and hydraulic test applications.

Based on a direct chip exposure design, the 4007B sensor does not have a diaphragm. A piezoresistive measuring element measures static and dynamic events with good dynamic response. The sensing element relies on an implanted resistive bridge on micromachined silicon, which minimizes hysteresis and repeatability errors. Other performance enhancements include a wide bandwidth improved by digital characterization techniques. The 4007B has low sensitivity to acceleration and thermal error.

The series is available in a number of forms, including PiezoSmart for automatic sensor identification compatible with the IEEE 1451.4 TEDS standard. You can use the pressure sensor with the Kistler 4665 amplifier when 0-to-10-V or 4-to-20-mA outputs are required. The body of the 4007B is constructed 17-4 PH stainless steel.
